Meet the Judge-Jesi Pace -Berkeley

"I had to create an equivalent for what I felt about what I was looking at ...not copy it ."
Georgia O'Keeffe

Originally from Shawsville,Virginia/ Huntsville , Alabama, Jesi
Pace -Berkeley attended Virginia Tech , graduating Summa cumlaude in Fine Art , Mathematics and Education.
She soon relocated in Tidewater Virginia where she taught public schools as well as served as Artist in Residence at Norfolk Academy.

Her natural ability to capture reflective glass earned her many awards , including a commissiin to highlight the glass collection at the Chrysler Museum . Her work continues to be exhibited in numerous galleriess throughout the East Coast including the Winston Gallery .

Among her recent accomplishments she won first place in the Faber Birren National Color Competition as well as National Face and Figure Competition.

Pace-Berkeley also won a Professional Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art for her watercolor " Sisters and Friends". Numerous corporate and private collections include her paintings of faces , landscapes, still lifes , animals, seascapes, florals and non objectives .

As a self-taught artist is Berkeley often comments that she "paints backwards" applying her darkest darks on the white paper to create an immediate full value composition . This strength of value and large-scale format combines with her vigorous brush strokes and mature color to create her evocative contemporary watercolors .

" It is just a sheet of paper,..." she often says as she encourages herself and others to take visual risk and find their true voice as artists. As a 32 year instructor Jesi retired from serving as Art Department Chair at Blacksburg High School where she taught Advanced Placement Studio Arts in Drawing and Painting , Sculpture and Two Dimensional Design .

Jesi continues to teach as a volunteer in Virginia Tech's Lifelong Learning Institute. She also participates in numerous benefit art events such as Artful Healing and Operation Smile .

Currently she is developing 10 day watercolor Workshop tours, " FOLLOWING VINCENT'S LIGHT" in the south of France (held this September and next May / June $2200) Please contact @ for more information about her studio tour, private lessons and / or workshop.
